This was camp p2p last night. I slept on a flat slab of concrete about two feet above the river. My only disturbance was from some raccoons having a fight.

I was on the river by 6:50 and making great progress, then arrived at the second lock, Dashields Lock, and things didn't look right. I signaled with the pull rope, then my air horn, but no response. I called them on my cell phone and found out the large chamber wasn't working, so they had to lock their regular traffic through a few barges at a time in the small chamber (the small chamber is usually for recreational boats. Fortunately I only had to wait through two lockings, but it still took over two hours, when it usually takes a little less than half an hour.

Many times the cities along the river can't be seen from "kayak level", because they're on a hill, behind a flood wall or hidden by trees. However, some are built on hillsides, like the one above, and look great!

This was the third lock, Montgomery Lock and Dam. They require 75 feet of rope, which I had. The actual drop here is about 18'.

This is a great shot of a tow boat on a dry dock.

There was a barge coming up behind me, so I couldn't get a very good shot of the sign welcoming people to West Virgina. Yes, I'm out of Pennsylvania now.

I ran out of Gatorade and didn't have any water with me, so had to use my filter and purification system to drink water from the river. It must have worked, cause I'm not dead yet. Fortunately I soon restored my water supply here at East Liverpool, Ohio.

This is my camp site for the night. It was nearly dark here, but the picture came out fine. I'm sleeping without my tent again.
