Upon arriving at Evansville, Indiana I saw the LST, which is a WW2 landing craft built in Evansville, served in the war and later with the Greek Navy, then bought by a group of veterans and returned to Evansville. It was displayed at Aurora, Indiana where I toured it last year.
This is Evansville. It's impressive from the river and located right on a bend in the river. I stopped long enough to walk through their riverfront park.
The casino at Evansville.
I arrived in Henderson after fighting strong winds and large waves. I was totally soaked from the waves coming in the boat. Also the temperature reached 92 degrees, with a heat index of 100 degrees. I visited a Walgreens and Windy's to cool off and get supplies.
The river is becoming wider. This is part of a five span bridge I saw three large long trains on hauling coal.
Immediately past Henderson I passed several miles of huge trees and expensive houses along the river.
At this point the wind was becoming stronger. Combined with the heat and strong sunlight, I was making little progress, getting wet and fighting to keep the kayak on course.
This is a video showing the strength of the wind. Wind was the story on CNN and Fox radio news today. When I called home, Denny (my son) said there were warnings of high winds and the possibility of hail and tornadoes there.
I stopped around 4:00 due to the wind. It never did slow down, so I stayed put on the second island past Henderson. I didn't realize it until Denny pointed out it's name is Deadmans Island. In this photo, you can see my tent is in an area with some protection from the wind. I was able to travel only 21 miles today.
