Day 25 - 2013

Yesterday was a good travel day and today was supposed to be as well. However, the weather had other things in mind for me.

I camped last night in a fairly isolated area, however, these twin bridges were nearby.

Upon arriving at Evansville, Indiana I saw the LST, which is a WW2 landing craft built in Evansville, served in the war and later with the Greek Navy, then bought by a group of veterans and returned to Evansville. It was displayed at Aurora, Indiana where I toured it last year.

This is Evansville. It's impressive from the river and located right on a bend in the river. I stopped long enough to walk through their riverfront park.

The casino at Evansville.

Evansville has to put a lot of chunks of concrete along their shoreline in order to prevent erosion. This is photo right outside of the city. All along this part of the river, you could see rows of corn that were planted earlier this year, but are now falling in the river.

I arrived in Henderson after fighting strong winds and large waves. I was totally soaked from the waves coming in the boat. Also the temperature reached 92 degrees, with a heat index of 100 degrees. I visited a Walgreens and Windy's to cool off and get supplies.

The river is becoming wider. This is part of a five span bridge I saw three large long trains on hauling coal.

Immediately past Henderson I passed several miles of huge trees and expensive houses along the river.

At this point the wind was becoming stronger. Combined with the heat and strong sunlight, I was making little progress, getting wet and fighting to keep the kayak on course.

This is a video showing the strength of the wind. Wind was the story on CNN and Fox radio news today. When I called home, Denny (my son) said there were warnings of high winds and the possibility of hail and tornadoes there.

I stopped around 4:00 due to the wind. It never did slow down, so I stayed put on the second island past Henderson. I didn't realize it until Denny pointed out it's name is Deadmans Island. In this photo, you can see my tent is in an area with some protection from the wind. I was able to travel only 21 miles today.
